Crumley Roberts' Mike BrownForsyth County, North Carolina made headlines this week for its zero-workplace fatality safety record for 2012.  The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics lists the state of North Carolina as one of the top 10 safest states in which to work.

Crumley Roberts’ Practice Group Leader for Workers’ Compensation, Mike Brown shares his thoughts on the topic:

It is absolutely wonderful to see that North Carolina is becoming a safer place to work.  Commissioner Berry and her staff are to be praised for promoting safety in the workplace.  In addition, employers across North Carolina who take employee safety seriously and invest resources to promote safe work places also deserve accolades.

Commissioner Berry is correct in saying that even one death is unacceptable.  We all play a role in employee safety.  Anyone can improve worker safety whether it is the safety supervisor at a plant correcting unsafe work behavior or an attorney pointing out unsafe conditions after someone has been injured in hopes that no one else will have to suffer the same injury.

When the unthinkable does happen and someone is injured or killed at work, workers' compensation is normally the only recourse for the victims or their families. Without fair and meaningful workers' compensation laws, most families would end up in dire financial situations. Eventually, these families would have to seek out public assistance in order to meet their basic needs if workers' compensation benefits were not available.

It is crucial that North Carolina keep fair and meaningful workers' compensation laws in effect in order to protect workers and their families.  It is also crucial that North Carolinians continue to strive for injury-free workplaces.
